Some Background on the Project

I have grown up and lived in the Midwestern United States for the entirety of my life. My mother is from Minnesota, my dad from Wisconsin and I would consider myself to be from a mixture of Illinois, Minnesota and now Wisconsin. Having lived in this region, I have always been aware of the various stereotypes that each state has like Minnesota nice, or in this case Wisconsin being the dairy state.

This in mind, when approaching this project, I wanted to tackle something local and familiar. This is what led me to dairy. I, along with many others, know about Wisconsin’s association with dairy. What I didn’t know were the intricacies of the dairy market, and how students can have an effect.

In this project, I decided to place a spotlight on UW-Madison’s Dairy Science program, and find out how they interact with Dane County dairy as a whole. I heard some amazing stories from both farmers and students, and truly walked away with entirely new knowledge on the subject.
